Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

A Ground Game of Chess

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the premier ground-fighting martial art. Literally translated "the gentle art" is a patient art form where an inch is often the difference between success and failure. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger individual by using leverage and proper technique – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds. Achieving a dominant position on the ground is one of the hallmarks of the style, and includes effective use of positional strategy – ie. guard, half-guard, side control, north /south and mount. This system of maneuvering and manipulation can be likened to a form of kinetic chess with the body of the practitioners. A submission hold is the equivalent of checkmate in the art.

Our Jiu-Jitsu program is a developmental program following the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation belt system.  Classes are technique driven, emphasizing the "gentle art".  Sparring or "rolling" is for advanced students only.

Our Academies are an affiliate of Carlson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under black belt instructor Carlos Carvalho.
